I am thrilled that, for the first time, a Ceramic House exhibition is transferring to Sladmore Contemporary, a validation of a seven-year journey curating shows at The Ceramic House, and an exciting new step for developing projects outside of the domestic arena.
Made in Korea opens at leading Mayfair Gallery, Sladmore Contemporary, 32 Bruton Place, London WJ1 6NW on July 12th, continuing until 28th July.
The show Made in Korea is part of a wider cultural exchange between the UK and Korea evolving throughout 2017 in Brighton, London, Stoke-on-Trent and Seoul, involving 20 artists from Korea, 5 from the UK, and encompassing 4 exhibitions, 4 concerts, an international residency, and the launch of a unique audio guide.
The phrase ‘Made in Korea’ is often synonymous with the mass production of ephemeral objects. Korean ceramic tradition stretches back several millennia, and the artists featured throughout this project reinterpret and rework this historic legacy. The displayed works combine contemporary references and highly individualised techniques, placing this impressive heritage within the world of globalised culture.

This is Kay Aplin’s most ambitious project to date at The Ceramic House. Following an Arts Council funded research trip to Korea in 2016, Aplin curated an exhibition of Korean ceramics at The Ceramic House in May, as part of Artists Open Houses at the Brighton Festival, transferring to leading Mayfair gallery, Sladmore Contemporary in July.
Two invited Korean ceramists will undertake a residency at The Ceramic House and the work will be exhibited at British Ceramics Biennial (BCB), Stoke-on-Trent, opening in September, alongside a new 4 channel sound installation from Young.
Kay Aplin will also create a new body of work reflecting on her recent experiences in Korea. This will consist of large-scale porcelain wall reliefs which will be displayed at BCB, Mullae Art Factory, Seoul and at Sladmore Contemporary in 2018.
