Perfection of Understanding concludes the Interbeing project.
Due to the ongoing global pandemic, plans for a residency for a group of UK ceramists collaborating with Chinese sound artists investigating the rich tradition of making techniques with porcelain in Jingdezhen have had to be delayed to 2022.
Perfection of Understanding is a publication that compiles the entire Interbeing project. Containing essays, photographs, Kay Aplin’s artwork Silk Roads and Floral Routes and describing the Interbeing journey, the book will contain an album.
UK based ceramic artists Andrew Livingstone, David Cushway and Valeria Nascimento will create artworks for the album. Both ceramic and sound artists will find inspiration in Jingdezhen, China, the centre of porcelain production for over 1000 years.

Inter-being is a Buddhist concept that comes from the Heart Sutra and, in the context of the Interbeing project, explores the cultural connections between two seemingly very different cultures, the UK and China. By starting from a point of similarity rather than distance, we hope to foster and encourage a deeper understanding between artists from the two countries, especially at this time when the challenges of Covid-19 are pressing us towards more open international collaboration.
