Interbeing – Perfection of Understanding

Oct-Nov 2021

Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute

Perfection of Understanding involves five UK artists (Andrew LivingstoneDavid CushwayValeria NascimentoFenella Elms and Kay Aplin) undertaking a residency at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China. Each ceramic artist is paired with a Chinese sound artist (Hui YeSun WeiSheng Jie, Echo Ho and Sin Ned) who will produce accompanying sound pieces, to create five new interdisciplinary sound and ceramic installations.

Due to the ongoing global pandemic, plans for a residency investigating the rich tradition of making techniques with porcelain in Jingdezhen have had to be delayed to 2022, and so a remote residency programme has been devised in the meantime whereby the artists-in-residence will work remotely in their studios to produce collaborative artworks that can be exhibited in the form of a film. This new way of working will explore the materiality of the various ceramic forms, soundtracked by sonic works created by the sound artists.

Film Released Dec 2021

The process will be guided by the project curators through video calls, messaging and email, with further assistance and research materials being supplied by the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. By working in this way, the ceramic artists are free to experiment away from the pressures of exhibition and can negotiate how the sound artists creatively respond to their work. The film by Roswitha Chesher -> will be exhibited initially online at The Ceramic House website -> and will be entered into film competitions and submitted for further exhibition in 2022.

Inter-being is a Buddhist concept that comes from the Heart Sutra and, in the context of the Interbeing project, explores the cultural connections between two seemingly very different cultures, the UK and China. By starting from a point of similarity rather than distance, we hope to foster and encourage a deeper understanding between artists from the two countries, especially at this time when the challenges of Covid-19 are pressing us towards more open international collaboration.
