The Ceramic House opened its doors for the first time in 2011, as part of Artists Open Houses, a festival that runs alongside the Brighton Festival every May and the year of their 30th anniversary.
In addition to revealing the first major tiled installations in the house and garden, Kay Aplin selected a number of ceramic artists to exhibit in the domestic context of the house and against the backdrop of the permanent installations, a pattern that has continued to this day. In 2011, eleven established and emerging ceramists participated in the show.
In 2011 The Ceramic House was also part of HOUSE Biennial. Sound artist Joseph Young was commissioned by HOUSE to create a sound installation for iPods. Base Sound :: Sonic Gold was composed entirely of sounds recorded in Kay’s studio and visitors were offered aural and visual sensory experiences into the world of ceramics.
Mi Elf Vision created a film of the exhibition, also capturing the first tiled installations created in the house and garden.
