After graduating from the School of Applied Art in Copenhagen in 1969, Anne Nielsen established ceramic studios in Ireland and Australia in the 1970s and since 1985 she has been based in Denmark. She has been awarded the National Craft Award from The Royal Dublin Society, Ireland and Gold Medal from the Concorso Internazionale Della Ceramica, Faenza, Italy.
For the past 20 years, she has been developing two kinds of ceramic techniques- “NERIAGE” laminated clay and “INTARSIA” inlaid clay, producing a distinctive range of coloured stoneware.
She colours white stoneware clay with oxides and stains and then laminates thin slices of different coloured clays together, enabling her to start building her ceramic vessels in striped or squared slabs. When working with Neriage, it is possible to obtain the same decoration inside and out.
Anne gets a lot of inspiration from her travels: horses in Mongolia, parrots in Australia, ornaments in Damascus, woven mats in Zaire, Africa and the red coral reefs in Indonesia have all influenced her work.
