Malene Hartmann Rasmussen’s work vivaciously crosses the boundaries of Fine Art, Design and Applied Art.
She graduated with an MA from Royal College of Art in 2011. Prior to RCA she studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Design, Bornholm in her native Denmark. Malene Hartmann Rasmussen is based in London and has exhibited in Denmark, UK, Croatia, Sweden and Belgium. Malene was shortlisted for Award, British Ceramics Biennial 2013. She has been Guest Artist at the International Ceramic Center Guldagergaard in Denmark and undertaken several public commissions, most recently a sculpture for Ringsted Musik-og Kulturskole (a music school for children).
She works with mixed media sculpture, making and arranging multiple components into complex narrative tableaux of visual excess. The dialogue between components and the way one’s unconscious can direct the composition interests her.
She tries to create a place beyond reality, a deceitful echo of the real world that bends the perception of what is real. Her aim is to create a visual poetry based on her own personal story.
Malene wants her work to look like a very skilled child could have made it, clumsy and elaborate at the same time. Initially the viewer may, mistakenly, be drawn to my figures thinking them to be toys; however closer examination reveals their rather darker narrative. They invite you into an absurd and surreal world where things are not what they seem…
