Born in Japan, Rie Tsuruta came to the UK to study her BA in Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics at the University of Brighton, graduating in 2007. She then worked as a ceramicist in Brighton for two years. After a stint working as a ceramic technician in Tokyo, she returned to the UK to study MA Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art. She completed her MA in June 2012 and is now continuing to develop her practice in London.
Rie’s tactile tableware is made to be used as a central part of people’s daily lives and to provoke a sense of intimacy and awareness of touch. They are porcelain; thrown, cast, carved, press moulded and fired to a high temperature in both reduction and oxidation. The forms derive naturally from the making process and impressions of landscape in her mind. The glaze’s muted colours derive from nature’s seasons and her memories of growing up in Japan.
Tsuruta’s aim is to create a still life or landscape in the domestic environment: in other words, memory of landscape made tangible.
