Glazed stoneware ceramic tiles can be employed to create stunning features for doorways and exterior architectural applications, as they are frost-proof, self-cleaning and will last indefinitely. This doorway is a bespoke design for a private villa in Spain. With a background in site-specific public art commissions, Kay’s method of working is to respond to place, and for this piece the inspiration came from Romanesque carvings in the local region of Asturias. The tiles were hand-made and hand-crafted in Kay’s studio, with a glaze palette designed to suit the architecture.
