Chun Bok Lee studied in the Faculty of Craft and Design in Seoul University and the University of Applied Sciences in Koblenz, Germany. He is currently Professor of Glass and Ceramic Design at Namseoul University in Korea. His works sits in collections around the world including Barcelona Design Museum and Westerwald Ceramic Museum in Germany. A multiple award winner in international biennials, including gold prize at Taiwan International Ceramic Biennial, Lee has had solo exhibitions both in Korea and abroad.
Chun Bok Lee’s work is concerned with sensory spaces and volume. He utilizes porcelain, and his techniques include pinching, coiling and polishing.
He says of his work,
“While at work, I initially think about the shadows and non-real spaces that the pieces will create after being installed, along with the arrangements, before considering the shape. The transparency and shadows created by the effects of light are words that conflict with each other.
The impressions experienced and observed during my walks in the forest are revealed through various lines and dots arranged irregularly and regularly on the surface of the work to play the role of creating differing amounts of light. The essential design elements consist a series of points and lines. The points and lines are previously planned during the work process, or created impromptu. The presented points and lines may seem linear, however they are not. I like obscure lines and curves.”
