Min Soo Lee graduated with an MFA in the faculty of Crafts and Design from Seoul University in 2012. He is currently artist in residence at Yanggu Porcelain Museum in Korea.
In 2016 he had a solo show at Gallery LVS in Seoul and has exhibited widely in the USA, Europe and Asia, including Musée les Arts Décoratifs, Paris and Artgeneve, Switzerland. Awards include Art Aurea, Berlin and Collect, Saatchi Gallery, London and Bronze prize at Cheongju Craft Competition, Korea.
His work is held in collections around the world including The Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, and Durham Oriental Museum, England.
He describes his work,
“My work involves creating a form with multiple layers of colour and cutting the objects to show the strata. I have been making the series with various sizes and colours by repeating the same process.
The beginning of the series stems from an interest in multicasting. Multicasting is a kind of slip-casting, which uses distinct coloured slips as numerous layers, and I have evolved it into my own unique method by combining it with wheel-throwing, the method I’ve been dedicating myself to for a very long time.
My works are made in the following order. First, I place a plaster mould that can make a cylindrical shape on a wheel and turn it. I pour the slip into the mold and apply it to the wall interior. Once the gypsum absorbs some of the moisture, I pour in different coloured slips. Repeating these processes creates a form of multiple layers of slip. Once the object is dry, I remove it from the cast and geometrically cut a piece of the object with a knife. The reason for this is to expose the cross section of multi- layered ceramic wall.
I trained myself rigorously in working with slip to be able to make a uniform layer and turn it into a neat form. I wanted to create simple forms with repetition of a limited number of colours, but not necessarily with a simple process.”
