Kay Aplin has been selected to show a piece of work in the “Mediterraneo” Contemporary Ceramics Competition in Grottaglie, Italy. She is showing Foraminifera IV. Foraminifera developed out of a residency at Interface, Connemara in Ireland in June 2023 where she investigated the geology and ecology of the coastline, bogs and mountains of Connemara collecting samples of moss, lichen, fossils and flora. Kay designed a series of forms which represent microscopic fossils, foraminifera, found in each grain of sand in the beaches of Dogs Bay in Connemara. She developed glazes that visually reference the surface textures of moss and lichen spreading across the surface of the ceramics. The work was exhibited initially at Wexford Arts Centre and subsequently the entire body of work at Watts Gallery in 2024 as part of The Ceramic House EDGES project.
